WHERE TO REPORT IDENTITY THEFT

Report all Identity Theft to the Federal Trade Commission, at http://www.IdentityTheft.gov.

IdentityTheft.gov is the federal government’s one-stop resource for reporting many types of identity theft. It also helps you to set up a recovery plan. The site provides streamlined checklists and sample letters, to creditors and credit bureaus, to guide you step-by-step through the recovery process.

WHEN TO REPORT IDENTITY THEFT TO YOUR LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY:

The FTC (Federal Trade Commission) says it is important to report identity theft to law enforcement in these three cases:

  1. You know the identity thief or you have other information that could aid a law enforcement investigation.

  2. An identity thief used your name in an encounter with law enforcement. For instance, this might involve a traffic stop or arrest. In this case, contact the law enforcement agency where your information was used.

  3. A creditor, debt collector, or other affected party will not accept the FTC Identity Theft Report, and insists you produce a law enforcement report. Important to note: The FTC recommends filing an Identity Theft Report first, and including it when you file a law enforcement report.

ALL OTHER IDENTITY THEFT OFFENSES:

For all other identity theft offenses not taken care of with the FTC identity theft report, we will take a report if:

  • You are a resident of Carrollton or

  • Your personal identifying information was used in Bosque County. Please complete the Identity Theft Affidavit and return it in person to the Bosque County Sheriff's Office. Your identity must be verified and your signature witnessed for the affidavit.

PLEASE NOTE:

Identity theft cases are difficult to investigate as many suspects hide their information or use other identity theft victim’s information while committing their crimes. We will investigate cases where a viable suspect is identified.
